Creating A Cottage Business {Proverbs 31}

I never thought I'd be a woman with a "cottage business", but here I am.

Background:
While on maternity leave last spring, I began to re-read a favorite book of mine.

This book is all about Proverbs 31.
{my favorite}
I had read this book several times, but with fresh eyes as a new mother and contemplating a new work schedule, I gleaned new wisdom.

I've always had a heart to be a stay-at-home-mom.
However, with Mr. Free following his calling and love of being a teacher, we couldn't feasibly afford for me to quit my job to be home with Levi.
We had been approached with an opportunity for me to take a part-time teaching position, and even that was scary for us financially.

In "Beautiful in God's Eyes", Elizabeth George very much encourages women to be keepers of the home.
That even if they have to work outside the home, God's calling is still for our heart to be about ministering to those precious to us in this space that God gave us.
She also talks about how the Proverbs 31 woman is an entrepreneur as well.
She doesn't just sit at home and not contribute to her family.
No siree.
She is quite the business woman.
But her heart, and time, is still to be with her home.
Thus, the "cottage business".

While I read through the chapter about cottage businesses, it was like God hit me over the head.
"Get our your sewing machine and sew."

I hadn't sewn in a couple of years, and even then it was for very basic items with the help of my mom.

But, the message was clear as day.
This is what I am to do.

So, with that, I took the part-time position....leaving me many hours home to enjoy and raise my little boy and keep our home.

And during naptime....build my cottage business.

I opened {Free Style Textiles} in May.
I've sewn my little heart out.
And I've loved every minute of it.

I have absolutely no business, graphic design, marketing or photography experience.
But by God's grace and other's wisdom, I have meandered my way through starting an online business.
I've learned quite a lot (and continue every day!).

But this little business has been an incredible blessing to our family in several ways.
One, it's been an incredible creative outlet for me.
As my identity has changed from Jenny, to Mrs. Free, to now Mommy, this allows me to still do something for my creative side.
Second, it has been a blessing for our family financially.
The Lord has provided just the right amount of sales to help my family out in needy times.
I haven't been so busy that I am swamped and away from my family (my highest priority!)
But, I'm never without an order to be working on, which is wonderful.
Third, I have learned so much about sewing and business, that I am able to bless my family by creating and mending things we need.

So how would this look for you?
The topic of woman working in the home vs. outside the home is incredibly difficult.
There is no right or wrong.
Many different families have many different circumstances, and the Lord knows them all.

However, scripture is clear that our heart is to be in our homes while be contribute financially.
My little cottage business, and the opportunity to work part-time outside the home has allowed me to do just that.
And it has given me such a peace, joy and balance.

But I can't sew....
Each person has incredible gifts and talents!
Maybe you are fantastic at math and can help during tax season to bring in some extra money.
Maybe you make incredible homemade greeting cards you can sell online or at craft fairs.
Or maybe taking photos is your thing?

The possibilities are endless.

So ladies, pray, ask God to reveal your strengths and gifts and a way you can be a blessing to your family financially.

How many of you have a 'cottage business'?
How has it blessed your family?

Etsy Shop Organization: The Business Side

I've previously shown you the physical make up of my little Etsy "shop".
It's just small corner of our family room.
To check out how I organized all the "things" that come along with a shop, look here!

Now, onto the "business" side of things.
I use this term loosely, as it is more of a hobby for me.
But, have to keep it organized!

So, I started with an adorable green chevron binder on clearance at Target for $1.20
 Cute huh?

Then filled it with practical items I use with each transaction.

Let's peek inside.
On the left are stamps, business cards and a pen.

Next comes the paperwork. If have forms to fill out to keep things running smoothly.
It includes a place to list current orders
A place to keep track of current inventory and items I am needing
And a form to track my expenses....to see if I'm really making a profit!
You can download these forms for you! For free!

Next, in page protectors I have thank you cards w/envelopes.
I include a little handwritten thank you with each purchase. : )
Next are some plain white mailers for small orders.
Then my stash of bags for local orders
Lastly a pad of legal paper to jot notes and ideas
I'm a newbie at this whole Etsy thing, but so far, so good!
Keeping organized really helps me manage my little store, with work, home, husband and baby!
Any other Etsy shop owners that have any tips on how they keep organized?

Mama Clutch

As a new mama, I had a dilemma.
I knew I didn't want to carry around both a purse and diaper bag.
So I registered for a cute diaper bag that kinda looked like a purse and thought I'd just throw my stuff in there with baby's.

It worked for awhile, but then I had a problem.
We would drop baby off with someone and run a quick errand and I needed to leave the diaper bag. I had no way of carrying my glucometer, phone and keys.
So I decided to make a Mama Clutch.
 This clutch is versatile.
I use it to hold my things. It holds:
My Nook Tablet
My glucose meter (which doubles as my wallet)
My keys
My iPhone
Juice box (for low blood sugars)

I slip the clutch in the diaper bag and if I need to leave the diaper bag with someone while I run an errand, I just grab the clutch and go!
Plus all my stuff is contained in the diaper bag and I'm not searching for it!

It can also work as a diaper clutch.
It holds 3 disposable diapers and a travel case of wipes.
So if you don't want to bring the whole diaper bag for a quick errand, just grab the clutch with diapers and wipes!
And I think it's pretty fashionable too!

If you're interested...I have one available in my shop!

So Mamas...what clever solutions have you come up with!

Something exciting...

I'm opening an Etsy store!!!
It should be up and live within a few days!

It will contain some great things for baby and home!
Here's some items that will be in the shop

 nursing pillows

 burp cloths
 E-Reader sleeves
Tea towels

Placemats, dish cloths, throw pillows and more!
I love modern prints for both home and baby!

I hope you'll all support me in this venture and spread the word!

God has provided an opportunity for my family for me to teach part-time next year! I am so thrilled to have more time in the home and to be with my sweet little boy! In doing so, our budget is going to be TIGHT! In reading about the Proverbs 31 woman I was encouraged to find a "cottage industry". Something that can bless your home and you can make a little money from with the surplus. I have been sewing items for my home and baby boy and hope to make a little from my items to support my family!

I will be sure to update when the store is up and going!

Make an E-Reader sleeve in 15 minutes!!

I'm still in the sewing mood, and Mr. Free and Levi, and my mom, surprised me yesterday with a Nook Tablet!
It's awesome!
But I need some sort of protection for it while it's in my purse.
I checked out Target but they are like $30!
So...I made one!

It's SUPER easy!!

Here we go...
(excuse the smudges...)
 1. Find some cute fabric and cut it to be about a half inch wider on each side as your e-reader and an inch longer than the length of 2 of your e-readers end to end.
 2. On each end, fold over a half inch of fabric and pin in place
 3. Sew both ends, using pins as your guide.
4. While keeping the "inside" part facing you, fold it in half (the "outside" part, or pretty part, facing the inside!) and pin, so you have about a half inch on each side
5. Sew along the sides, using the pins as your guide
 6. Turn inside out!
 7. Slide in your e-reader and you're done!

Easy peasy!
